Born in Brazil to Lebanese parents, Ghosn grew up throughout Brazil, Lebanon, and France. No stranger to having to nimbly shift directions, he says, “Change has always been a part of my life.”15
How to Build Agility
For many, getting comfortable with change takes practice. Traditional corporate culture has led us to believe that we must have the right answer and feel supremely confident in the plan we’ve created; moving to Plan B is often perceived as a failure. Why? In a world of change, getting in the habit of proactive scenario planning or having a Plan B—and C and D and E—is critical. How often do you think of alternative outcomes?
Have your teams embrace a mindset of preparedness by ensuring that they plan for possible Wild Cards, which is the name of another tool in the Innovation Toolkit, designed to help teams think ahead. To use Wild Cards, select a project that teams are currently working on and ask them to present their project plan. If they are like most people, they will present a “perfect world” scenario: “if all goes according to plan, this plan will work.” But when was the last time you worked on something that went exactly according to plan?
Now break up the group into smaller teams and challenge them to come up with a way to succeed despite the Wild Card you next assign each of them. The Wild Cards are completely unexpected scenarios that could catch them off guard and ruin their carefully laid Plan A. For example, Team 1 will have to achieve the goal with half the money, Team 2 with half the time, and Team 3 with severely restricted technology or resources. How would they still follow through? You’ll be amazed at what teams can come up with, because sometimes working under constraints can spark even better solutions. Getting in the mindset of preparing for change before change is forced on you is a great skill for teams to learn for both business and their personal lives.
